The Olympic torch relay: Birmingham

Finally, the Olympic torch relay touched Birmingham between Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June 2012. The city proudly celebrated the event. The torch arrived in Birmingham followed by huge crowds during all the day of Saturday. It passed through the Staffordshire and the Black Country before arriving in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham.

Birmingham was one of the four UK locations to celebrate the torch’s advent with a evening concert at Cannon Hill Park. The event saw the presence of top UK music artists as the boy band The Wanted, the R’n’B star Loick Essien and the rock band Morning Parade and Cliff Richard. The event included the performance of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. A limited number of tickets was available, but 20,000 lucky local residents won the free entrance to this celebration.

On Sunday morning, the first torchbearer started from Victoria Square around 6 a.m. .The torch left  Birmingham through Sparkbrook and Hall Green, calling at Shirley, Solihull town centre and Earlswood. The stage ran trough Redditch, Alcester, Evesham, Chipping Campden, Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa, Warwick and Kenilworth, before arriving in Coventry.

La fiaccola olimpica  arriva a Birmingham

Finalmente la torcia olimpica ha fatto tappa a Birmingham tra sabato 29 e domenica 30 giugno. La città ha celebrato con fierezza l’evento. Il sabato la torcia olimpica seguita da folle esultanti lungo tutto il percorso, ha raggiunto lo Staffordshire e la Black Country prima di arrivare a Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham.

Birmingham è stata una delle quattro località del Regno Unito a celebrare l’arrivo della torcia con un concerto serale che si è tenuto a Cannon Hill Park. L’evento ha visto la partecipazione di importanti artisti musicali britannici come la boy band Tha Wanted, la star R’n’B Loick Essien la rock band Morning Parade e Cliff Richard con la presenza anche del Royal Birmingham Ballet. Erano disponibili solo un numero limitato di biglietti per partecipare al concerto, ma 20,000 fortunati residenti hanno avuto la possibilità di partecipare gratuitamente.

La domenica, il primo staffettista è partito verso le sei di mattina da Victoria Square. La torcia ha lasciato Birmingham passando attraverso Sparkbrook e Hall Green, facendo delle fermate a Shirley, Solihull town centre ed Earlswood. La tappa ha poi proseguito per Redditch, Alcester, Evesham, Chipping Campden, Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa, Warwick and Kenilworth, prima di arrivare a Coventry.
